Clear, radiant skin is not achieved with expensive creams, masks, and facials (although they can enhance the health of your skin). If you want truly beautiful skin, you need to start looking at your liver and gut health.
Your liver is not only responsible for breaking down alcohol, but essential for healthy skin. Your skin is the window to your health. I have been thinking a lot about this topic since switching my own diet to an all-plant based diet. My skin has become more hydrated, clear, and glowing since eliminating meat, dairy and gluten from my diet. Trust me when I say this, cutting out dairy alone will do wonders for your skin.
So how do you optimize your liver function for beautiful skin? Keep reading!
- Detoxify
Your skin is the window to your health, and not to mention, your body’s largest organ. The liver is responsible for the elimination of toxins. When toxins build up in your body, they appear on your skin in the form of breakouts.
It is so important to work in daily detox habits to keep your skin clear. I share my favorite daily detox habits in a previous post. These tips will be sure to help your skin glow!
- The liver and fat
When the liver is congested and unable to break down toxins, your body tries to purge these toxins through other ways, such as your pores.
Alone with eliminating toxins, the liver is also responsible for breaking down fat. If the liver is not working properly, fat will just circulate in the bloodstream and it ends up getting used by the sebaceous glands instead.
Now, don’t confuse fats with healthy fats. You should eat healthy fats on a daily basis, such as avocado, walnuts, almonds, and coconut butter. However, when you eat not-so healthy fats, your system becomes congested and this causes clogged pores.
- Eat From the Earth
A happy liver equals happy skin. That means it is absolutely necessary to nourish our bodies with food directly from the earth. Your skin needs vitamins, minerals, and nutrients to look its best.
Here are general guidelines that I like to follow:
- Your diet should consist of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.
- Eliminate dairy, wheat, and soy
- Cut out refined sugars. Use alternatives, such as coconut sugar, honey, maple syrup, and coconut nectar.
- Incorporate foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as chia seeds, walnuts, and avocados.
- Start each day with a green smoothie
- Hydrate
Water is the foundation of supple, radiant skin.
- Make sure you are drinking filtered water throughout the day
- Eat foods with a high water content, such as watermelon, cucumbers, grapes, celery, and romaine lettuce.
- Cut back on caffeine and alcohol. They are very dehydrating and your liver also works over-time when you drink too much of these beverages.
I hope you find these tips helpful! Remember, your skin speaks volumes about your health. If you detoxify, incorporate healthy fats into your diet, eat from the earth, and hydrate, I can assure that your skin will thank you.
