These healthy almond butter twix bars are a homemade, better for you version of the candy bars we all love. They have a layer of almond flour shortbread, an almond butter middle, and a dark chocolate topping. Naturally sweetened, vegan and gluten-free!
Everyone had their favorite candy bars growing up. Mine were Mound, Milky Way, and Twix Bars! Give me anything with chocolate, coconut, or caramel and I’m in. Anyone else?
Now, I can’t even remember the last time I had a store-bought candy bar. Maybe back in high school? I mean it’s been a long time. Traditional candy bars packed full of artificial ingredients and super high in added sugars. You can easily make your own healthier version of these right at home!
Have you tried my Raw Vegan Twix Bars or these delicious Protein Almond Butter Cups?
This recipe is a different version of my Raw Vegan Twix Bars, but this time we’re baking the almond flour crust and adding an almond butter filling that’s going to make you drool. And of course, these are still completely vegan and gluten-free – holler!
Just like traditional twix bars, this healthy, homemade version has three delicious layers: a shortbread layer, an almond butter layer and a chocolate layer. You’ll need only 5 main ingredients:
- almond flour
- maple syrup
- almond butter
- coconut oil
- dark chocolate
How to make the twix bars:
1. First, you’ll make your shortbread cookie base by mixing the almond flour with coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla and salt. Press this into an 8×8 inch square pan and bake for 10-12 minutes.
2. Once the base is done baking, make your almond butter layer by mixing almond butter, maple syrup, coconut oil, vanilla, and salt in a pot over medium-low heat for about 2 minutes.
3. Pour your almond butter layer on top of the cooled shortbread cookie layer, and then place it in the fridge to harden for about 30 minutes.
4. Melt your chocolate chips with coconut oil in a small saucepan. Pour the chocolate over the almond butter and spread the chocolate around with a spatula to make an even layer. Place it back in the fridge for 20 minutes until the chocolate has hardened.
5. Finally, cut into 16 bars and enjoy!
Don’t be intimidated by these steps. It’s much easier than you might think!
How to store your twix bars:
These twix bars should be covered in the fridge until you’re ready to serve them. They will stay just fine in your fridge for about 1 week, but you can also keep them in a freezer-safe container in your freezer for up to 1 month.
If you keep them in your freezer, be sure to leave them out on the counter for a few minutes before serving to let them soften up a bit.

In the Twix Bar recipe, step 1(shortbread layer) it says to mix almond flour, coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla and salt. But the ingredients don’t call for vanilla and salt in the shortbread layer. How much vanilla and salt should we put in that layer?
Thanks for catching that, Jeanne! It should be 1 tsp vanilla and 1/4 tsp salt in the shortbread layer. I just updated the recipe 🙂 Hope you enjoy the bars!
